Mellow Oaks crowned district hockey champs
Despite being a smaller school than any of their opponents, the team stood back for nobody and played their hearts out in every match.
2019 is the only second year in which PLG Mellow Oaks Academy has been part of the D12 Primary Schools Hockey league held throughout the Roodepoort District.
During their first year of participation, their junior boys’ team was placed third in the Private School division.
This year has seen the team going from strength to strength, and by building on the foundation laid last year, they were placed first in the Private School League.

The team also made it through to the play-offs of the District held in September 2019 at Bastion High School.
During the 2019 season, PLG Mellow Oaks kept a winning score-sheet, beating other private schools such as Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel (4–0), Trinityhouse Little Falls (6–0), Maragon Ruimsig (1–0), Curro Krugersdorp (3–2) and Charterhouse (2–0).
Despite being a smaller school than any of their opponents, the team stood back for nobody and played their hearts out in every match.
On Tuesday, 10 September, the team played in the quarterfinal against Laerskool Helderkruin and won the match with a 3–1 penalty aggregate.
Mellow Oaks saw themselves up against a formidable foe in the form of Curro Krugersdorp for the semifinals, but won the match 1–0.
In the district final, Mellow Oaks played Kings School West Rand, with neither team having lost a single match in their respective league seasons.
At one point in the match, the score was 1–0 in favour of Mellow Oaks, but Kings drew level and the match was open for the two teams to take.
An all-out attack from Mellow Oaks Academy saw the boys digging really deep and giving everything they had to secure a well-deserved victory that saw them crowned as the district champions.
