Honeydew Police keeping a close eye on xenophobic attacks

“We are monitoring Zandspruit and Cosmo City frequently, especially areas occupied by foreign nationals,” said Jacobs during a Honeydew Sector 3 Community Policing Forum.

With xenophobic attacks rearing their ugly heads in many parts of Johannesburg, the worst area being the CBD, the Honeydew Police have indicated that they are closely monitoring vulnerable locations in their precinct.

Although some crime prevention vehicles and personnel have been dispatched to assist other areas, apparently reducing crime operations in those areas, the Honeydew Police Sector 3 manager, Captain Karen Jacobs, said areas of concern are frequented by the guys in blue.

“We are monitoring Zandspruit and Cosmo City frequently, especially areas occupied by foreign nationals,” said Jacobs during a Honeydew Sector 3 Community Policing Forum meeting.

The two areas are watched with eagle eyes by the police because they are home to large numbers of foreigners. In addition, these areas have in the past experienced friction between nationals and foreigners which has led to violent demonstrations and looting incidents.

Jacobs was pleased to be able to state that no reports of xenophobic behaviour had been received so far. “The closest we’ve had to xenophobic attacks occurred in Kya Sands and Krugersdorp (areas neighbouring Honeydew),” she said.
