Drifters conquer in first round of Nedbank Cup

The future has never looked as promising for Golden Drifter Football Club as it does now, after thrashing two opposing teams and making it into the next round of the Nedbank Cup.

Clad in their brand new kit for the season, the Zandspruit outfit walked confidently into the Muldersdrift Video Stadium in Muldersdrift on Saturday, 7 September to face D-10 from Diepsloot first, and then later play against Young Boys FC from Randfontein.

The first game against D-10 was a very tough one for coach Mahlatsi Mabusela’s boys, especially in the second half as they seemed to be playing a defensive game against a side that looked to level the score, if not beat them.

Drifters scored their opening goal 30 minutes into the match after they were awarded a penalty. Their celebrations were short-lived, as they were caught sleeping by D-10 who equalised in less than a minute.

Before the end of the first half, Keitumetsi Baloyi scored a wonderful goal. In the second half, Baloyi returned to the scoring books by extending the lead in the 59th minute. This goal fired up D-10 as they returned with their second goal in the 67th minute making it 3–2. They tried very hard to equalise after this goal but Drifters kept them at bay until the final whistle.

Later in the day, Drifters played against Young Boys, beating them 3–0 in an enthralling game.

Coach Mabusela praised his boys for the outstanding results. “Considering that these were our season’s opening games, we played well. The games were very competitive but helped the boys to perform beyond their strengths. However, we did spot our weaknesses, and will be improving on them soon. I have no doubt about this young team producing positive results in the league this season,” he reflected.
