The Muldersdrift Police are probing are case of possible suicide following the death of a young woman who allegedly soaked herself in petrol and set herself alight at the Ruimsig informal settlement (also known as Peacock) on Wednesday, 4 September.
According to the spokesperson for the station, Constable Slindile Ntuli, the 17-year-old victim was at her boyfriend’s home when the incident occurred.

“Her boyfriend left her preparing to go to school, in the house with his mother. On his way back from the tuck shop, he saw his girlfriend covered in flames, screaming and running around. She grabbed the boyfriend’s mother and she was also burnt in the process,” she said as she unravelled the incident.
“It was alleged that the victim poured petrol on her body and set herself alight. Both the victim and the boyfriend’s mother were taken to hospital for medical attention and the victim died due to the severe injuries she had sustained,” Ntuli explained.
She added that the motive is still unknown at this stage and the matter is still under intense investigation.
