The release of Stephen King’s IT: Chapter 2 had people flocking to the cinemas last weekend, me included.

I have always been a huge fan of the author and have been devouring his books since I was a teenager. I have read IT (twice!), watched the original movie (also more than once), so, needless to say, when a remake of the movie was announced for release late in 2018, I just had to go and see it.

Yes, for many people this may seem quite odd, as they might think that it is just a horror story, filled with blood, guts and gore (which, truth be told, it mostly is), but, there is, in my opinion, much more to this story than just that.

For me, it is a story of courage, bravery and true friendship, as a group of five misfit friends emerge as unlikely heroes when they have to not just deal with the challenges of a controlling father, an overprotective mother, fat-shaming, racism, and bullying, but also have to save the town from the evil they call IT, aka Pennywise, the Dancing Clown.

The group of youngsters, calling themselves The Losers, goes through some very scary and horrific encounters with IT, and, after almost giving up, find the strength and courage to face IT and kill it. But, they only manage to accomplish this 27 years later.

And, even though they are scared, they come together one more time to banish IT forever. During the final encounter with this evil being, they have to overcome some of their biggest fears and insecurities, let go of some of the unnecessary guilt they carry around and face and acknowledge some deep and dark secrets, before they are able to defeat IT once and for all, resulting in them becoming heroes in their own right.

We all have a Pennywise or two in our lives, turning us into fearful beings, filled with uncertainty and anxiety, making us believe that we are not good enough. Your Pennywise might be big or small, and just the thought of facing it might paralyse you with fear or make you want to run away in horror. But, when you stand tall and face it, you will discover that you too, are a hero.

May you have the courage to face your Pennywise this week, and may you discover the hero inside to overcome it.

Until next week…
