Today in history: South Africa bags the most medals at All Africa Games
The closing ceremony of the games was held on 19 September.
Six thousand athletes from all over the African continent gathered in Johannesburg to compete in the 7th All Africa Games, which opened on 9 September, 1999.
By 18 September South Africa had achieved 180 medals, the most on the log, followed by Egypt with 156 medals and Nigeria with 128.
The closing ceremony of the games was held on 19 September. South Africa was extremely proud of its athletes for doing so well.
The 1999 Games included athletics, baseball, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, karate, netball, swimming, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.
