Community outreach for UniCollege

These learners have identified three charity organisations from the Roodepoort, Krugersdorp and Randfontein communities that they would like to provide service and support to.

The learners at UniCollege, a Krugersdorp-based school, have decided that the community needs some support. They have identified three charity organisations from the Roodepoort, Krugersdorp and Randfontein communities that they would like to provide service and support to during the second half of the year.

Saturday, 3 August was an eye-opening and rewarding experience for the learners, who volunteered at Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen in Claremont. The teenage learners donated shoes, clothing, cleaning aids and food to the soup kitchen and spent the morning icing cupcakes and interacting with the children who were there.

Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen first started in the 1940s and is the oldest soup kitchen in Johannesburg. It is now being run by Yolandie Oberholzer, the daughter of the founders, and her husband Riaan.

Mr UniCollege, Jeandre Erasmus, reflected on the experience, saying, “What really touched us was the amazing work that Yolandie and Riaan are doing to empower these children; the principles they are taught, from appreciating and not taking anything for granted, to their general hygiene. It was a true inspiration to us all.”

This soup kitchen has a huge impact in the Claremont area, and the learners felt the need to support this worthy cause. They hoped it would play a role in lifting the burden of poverty and giving sense to people’s lives.

The UniCollege learners extended their gratitude to Tiger Brands for the maize, samp and bread provided to each family in support of their cause. The other organisations supported by the learners are Cradle of Hope in Krugersdorp and a women’s shelter in Randfontein.
