MMC examines hot spots in Ward 89

“We will be receiving feedback on the issues raised at the October Councillors' Forum meeting,” said Councillor Bester.

The MMC for Economic Development, Leah Knott, and representatives of various municipal-owned entities recently conducted an oversight visit in Ward 89 to examine the service hot spots in the area.

The hot spots were identified by Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester, during her pre-oversight visit in July, when she was accompanied by representatives from various Residents Associations and the new Urban Inspector, Henna van Niekerk.

According to Councillor Bester, the following issues were highlighted: by-law enforcement; traffic calming; road surface maintenance; removal of alien invasive plants; seeping underground water; street light maintenance; relocation of displaced people; and unlocking economic development.

“We will be receiving feedback on the issues raised at the October Councillors’ Forum meeting,” she said.

The MMC made the following suggestions: Firstly, that both the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Johannesburg Water (JW) present their Capex projects for the financial year to all Region C councillors. Secondly, that the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the Department of Social Development partner with Home Affairs to relocate the displaced people throughout the region. Her third suggestion was for the Transport Department to present a plan for formalised taxi ranks in the region, and finally that the Regional September A Re Sebetseng initiative be the marking of fire hydrants in the Ward.

“We are thankful for the political support offered and look forward to the realisation of the proposed plans,” she concluded.
