WATCH: Kangaroo Mother Care is important

EMS personnel are urged to RSVP by sending an email to Queen.Speco@gauteng.gov.za.

All Emergency Management Services (EMS) personnel are invited to attend training in Kangaroo Mother Care every Friday until 27 September, at the Florida Park Fire Station.

The Lebone College of Emergency Care has partnered with the CoJ EMS Training Academy and the Johannesburg Department of Health, in an effort to train emergency care personnel in a method called Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). This method of caring for a newborn baby is not limited to mothers only – anyone can use it.

The objective of KMC is to prevent neonatal death. This subject is taken seriously and research into ways of achieving this goal is done continually. The body temperature of a neonate (a newborn baby) can drop rapidly, leading to hypothermia. KMC is a method that keeps the baby warm from the time and place of delivery until it reaches a health care facility.

The training, which runs from 9am to noon, is said to be CPD (Continuous Professional Development) accredited.

EMS personnel are urged to RSVP by sending an email to Queen.Speco@gauteng.gov.za.
