The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 5 September at the Discovery Bowling Club at 6.30pm.
On Thursday, 15 August, the West Rand Toastmasters gathered again at the Discovery Bowling Club for meeting number 469, themed ‘Time’.
The meeting was attended by two new faces, Thoko Zani and Peter Brown, who were warmly introduced and welcomed by Thato Majela, the Vice-president for Membership.
The meeting, which was well attended, was called to order by Jeffrey Nkhwazi, the Sergeant-At-Arms, who then handed over the gavel to President Lynnette Harris.
As per the norm, Lynnette gave the welcome and also presented apologies.
Alwyn van Wyngaarden took over the role of being the Toastmaster of the evening and reminded the attendees about the importance of time and that it is a gift to be used to enhance lives.
After the introduction of the visitors, Jacqui Motaung, who is the Secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting. This was followed by a toast, proposed by Michael Glencross, to Toastmasters International.
Claude Joshua, the Joke Master for the evening, had everyone in stitches.
The role of Time Keeper was effectively performed by Edna Kamanga, the Treasurer.
Jacqui took on the role of Grammarian and chose ‘prattle’ as the word of the evening.
The Table Topics Master role was taken up by Thato Majela, while the evaluation chair was occupied by Stephanie Watkins.
Three prepared speeches were presented during the evening. The first one was delivered by Ernest Watkins and was entitled ‘I Don’t Like Cricket, I Love It’.
The second speech was delivered by Lynnette, and titled ‘Double Rainbow’. It was all about the various colours of the rainbow and that seeing a double rainbow is really seeing a reflection of the first rainbow.
The third speech, entitled ‘Evaluate to Motive’, was an Educational Speech given by Glen Campbell, the Vice-president for Public Relations from Roodepoort.
Some awards were handed out as follows:
Best Contributor – Alwyn van Wyngaarden
Best Table Topic/ Impromptu Speech – Thoko Zani
Best Speech – Lynnette Harris
Best Evaluator – Stephanie Watkins
The new member, Mampe Mosito, won Money in the Pot, which is used to raise funds for the Club.
Glen then gave a General Evaluation of the Meeting.
