Ward 126 to host a memorial lecture for Women’s Month
Dorothy was one of the leaders of the women’s march to the Union buildings in 1956 and was later detained and charged with 10 others on five counts under the Suppression of Communism Act 44 of 1950.
On Saturday 24 August the Ward 126 ANC will be hosting the Dorothy Nyembe Memorial Lecture as part of their Women’s Month activities at Weltevreden Park Primary School.
The keynote speaker will be Fasiha Hassan who is a former University of the Witwatersrand Student Representative Council secretary general and is now a qualified lawyer.
Fasiha is also a Member of the Provincial Legislature in Gauteng.
Dorothy Nyembe joined the ANC in 1952 and in 1954 she participated in the establishment of the ANC Women’s League in Cato Manor.

ANC branch coordinator, Qhawe Zulu said, “Ward 126 is appealing to the community to come out and support this Women’s Month initiative and attend the memorial lecture that will commence at 11am on Saturday”.
On 26 July, in the spirit of Mandela Month, Ward 126 held a successful soup kitchen at the Weltevreden Park Methodist Church.
