Today, 18 August, Owen Da Gama was born.

He is a former South African footballer, and was manager at Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars and Platinum Stars, among others.

His career in football began when he played for Arcadia Shepherds FC Juniors, Colchester United (NPSL), Pretoria Callies and Dynamos.

Da Gama was loaned out to League of Ireland team, Derry City, with the new coach bringing in two more foreign players.

During his time at Derry City, he won the League of Ireland First Division Shield by scoring a hat-trick in the final, and the League of Ireland First Division where he was top goal scorer of the club and league.

He was also named the Professional Footballers’ Association of Ireland First Division Player of the Year for the 1985–86 season and made a permanent move. Da Gama was the only player in Ireland to have his own fan club.

Da Gama was also once signed by Moroka Swallows.

His playing career was ended by a serious knee injury. He then turned to coaching at his former club, Dynamos.

In 2007, he replaced Bibey Mutombo as the head coach of Orlando Pirates after six games of the season had left the team at the bottom of the league standings.

He is the current coach of Highlands Park.
