Cricket Club encourages participation in the sport
It all began with Delfos Engineering providing kits for local youngsters to play soccer, and the founders realised that a cricket club would also unite the community.
Delfos Cricket Club that was established in 1945 and re-established in 1982, is affiliated with the Central Gauteng Lions Cricket Board (CGLCB). Its players are from the areas of Bosmont, Claremont, Discovery, Florida, Maraisburg, Newclare and Newlands.
The club’s home ground is Cecil Payne Stadium in Maraisburg and juniors’ fields are in Bosmont, at Florida Park High School and La Salle College.
Executive member, Faizel Sallie said, “We have a strong community focus and provide programmes for local schools in the area. The running and planning of our club is very important to us because it is just as important as running a business. We have a long history of playing cricket as well as hosting international teams and tournaments. This is what youngsters need to hear to encourage future participation in the game.”

Delfos Cricket Club was founded by Hamat and Issy Sallie, Shorty and Moosa Bagus, Amien Variava and Uzar Gassiep.

For a while, the old Fietas and car park Cricket Fields were buzzing players playing in numerous fixtures, but segregation during the 1960s meant that the club had to be disbanded.
The club’s achievements have earned it the respect of the CGLCB and invitations to some of Cricket South Africa’s most celebrated events like the Coke Week, Sunfoil Night Series and Academy Games came its way.
Junior coach, Mohammed Abed said, “Some of our youngsters have also been part of the Lenasia Premier League, playing in the U/12, U/14, U/16, Youth and the Senior leagues”.
The Delfos Ladies Team has grown during the 2018/ 19 season. Under the guidance of the club’s national players, Yolani Fourie and Robyn Searle, the team has won the Ladies T20 Competition and finished third in the Ladies 35-overs League.
