Florida Swimming Club juniors and seniors excel

Almost every club in Central Gauteng participated in the championships, resulting in over 600 entries to the event.

 

Florida Swimming Club is proud of its swimmers for doing exceptionally well at the Provincial Short Course Championships at the Wahoo Aquatic Centre in Sunninghill on 26 to 28 July.

The team of 22 swimmers consisted of 14 junior of 13 years and younger, and eight senior swimmers of 14 years and older.

Almost every club in Central Gauteng participated in the championships, resulting in over 600 entries to the event.

The Club’s seniors kicked off each morning when they took part in their events, and the top scorer was Blake Godfrey.

Blake scored a total of 57 points and won bronze in the 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke and 100m butterfly items.

He also won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 200m backstroke, and secured gold in 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle.

Other senior medallists include Demi-Lee Carlisle, Amy O’Rourke and Danyal van der Schyff. In the freestyle relay for U/17s and over, the girls team took third place to secure a bronze medal.

Head coach Tracey Hemphill said, “Our juniors made up the larger portion of our team. Two of our juniors, Ethan Engelke and Aiden Godfrey, swam qualifying times for nationals in March 2020. This is a huge feat, especially at their young age.”

Medal winners among the juniors were Ethan Engelke who won bronze in 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke.

Aiden Godfrey won silver in the 200m freestyle. In the freestyle relay for U/10s freestyle relay team as well as the medley relay team each won a silver medals.

The U/12 girls team managed to win an impressive bronze medal in the medley relay event.
