The MMC for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, provided an update on the long-standing issue of housing for the Plot 323 dwellers.
The update follows the visit of the Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, to the Wilgespruit plot after receiving a complaint about the dwellers’ living conditions.

Leah provided Minutes from a recent ward committee meeting which was held to discuss progress on the housing project.
The meeting was attended by the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) officials to give details of the project, according to Leah.

On the basis of the Minutes of the meeting, Knott stated that at the [beginning of] May they [the City] advertised for a service provider to undertake the Ecological Impact Assessment (an environmental assessment) on an area called Haylon Hills 5 and 6 (the plots earmarked for housing), and that the tender was closed on 24 May.
Leah also stated that the development rights that JPC is looking at getting, will result in about 350 housing units of varying properties being built, with flexibility to supply temporary emergency accommodation, and that to date they have lodged a township establishment application. The MMC proceeded to say that JPC was expecting the township establishment application to be approved by the City by October and were [expecting] to finish the development concept by the end of June.
This is a developing story. More updates on this matter will be published as information is made available.
