Wednesday, 7 August, is a date that is not only engraved on the plaque at SPARK Weltevreden Park, but also on the hearts of the academic staff and learners who witnessed the inauguration of the new school.
Although learning started in January this year, the official opening of this newly built institution, situated in the heart of Weltevreden Park, took place eight months later.

A euphoric vibe surrounded the school on the morning of the prestigious ceremony. The day started with a fun interactive assembly before the speeches and the cutting of the ribbon.
The CEO and co-founder of this education, Stacey Brewer, provided insight into the school’s opening and vision.
“SPARK Schools consists of a network of low-cost private primary and high schools operating in South Africa. We currently operate 21 schools. The reason why we started was to address the crisis that we see in education in the country. South Africa currently spends a great proportion of its budget (GDP) on education, but is ranked bottom of the world. So SPARK started to provide an affordable model for the country, with the aim of serving as many communities as possible to ensure equal and high quality education,” she explained.
She added that the Weltevreden Park school was one of the six new schools, including a high school, that they opened this year. One of their sister schools was also officially opened on Thursday, 8 August in Witpoortjie.
When asked what set them apart from other schools, Stacey said, “We are a blended or personalised branded school, meaning we are really able to focus on each child’s needs. Our schools are not a traditional set up where you find a teacher teaching a huge number of children. We instead use a blended approach in the form of technology that has been integrated into the schooling system to create a very rich learning environment”.
