It was concluded that the next meeting will be held on Thursday, 15 August at the Discovery Bowling Club at 6.30pm.

The West Rand Toastmasters held their 468th meeting on Thursday, 1 August, with ‘Hats’ as the theme for the evening.

The meeting was called to order by Jeffrey Nkhwazi, who is the Sergeant-At-Arms. He handed over to the President, Lynnette Harris.

Lynnette presented apologies and also gave a warm welcome to all those who attended the meeting.

The role of introducing guests was taken on by Claude Joshua, after which Jacqui Motaung, the new secretary, read the previous meeting’s Minutes. She was commended for her professionalism.

Glen Campbell, who chose the theme, took on the role of the Toastmaster.

The meeting consisted of a wonderful display of different hats, and Glen spoke about the history of hats. She touched on all the different types of hats that have been worn from the olden days until today, and gave some insight into their meanings.

Thato Majela was the Grammarian for this meeting and chose ‘flabbergasted’ as the word of the day. It was well used throughout the meeting.

A toast to South Africa was proposed by André Diedericks, who mentioned that there is always a silver lining and people must concentrate on the positives rather than the negatives.

The role of Evaluation Chair was performed by Esther Dreyer, who is the immediate past president. The Table Topics/ Impromptu speech mistress was Lynnette Harris, who had everyone laughing at the topics chosen.

There were two prepared speeches, which were delivered by Michael Glencross and Alwyn van Wyngaarden.

Michael’s speech, entitled Leadership and Me, was up first. Alwyn followed with his speech, titled I Can.

The general evaluator, who was Malcolm Harris, the Vice-president for Education, was pleased with the manner in which the meeting was conducted
