Today in History: Former South African footballer Mark Williams is born

Internationally he is predominantly remembered for being in the squad that played in the 1996 African Cup of Nations.

Mark Williams is a former South African footballer who played as a forward for many international clubs throughout his career. He was born on this day in 1966.

He played for Corinthians in Brazil, Wolverhampton Wanderers in England, Chongqing Lifan and Qingdao Zhongneng in China and RWD Molenbeek in Belgium.

At Wolves he scored once, his goal coming in a League Cup tie against Fulham in October 1995.

Internationally, he is predominantly remembered for being in the squad that played in the 1996 African Cup of Nations. He was the joint second scorer with four goals, when he scored both goals in the final after coming on as a substitute, taking South Africa to a victory over Tunisia 2–0 to win the cup for the first time.

When he retired, he had played for the South African national football team 23 times, scoring eight goals. He also played for the South African Beach Soccer team in 2006.
