#WeRead – Meet Ria, a local author who made reading a habit

She has appealed to the residents to support her and buy her book.

As we approach National Book week, which is taking place from 2 to 8 September, the Record decided to sit down with a published local author, to discuss the importance of reading.

She said she chose to make reading part of her everyday life because she is all about lifelong learning.

Ria told us that she decided to start writing because she had nothing better to do with her life. She added that she loves to read books about adventure and kidnappings.

“Since I love reading about adventurous things, I decided that I should write a book in the same category,” she said.

“When I decided to start writing, it was because I was bored and did not want to sit around doing nothing. The book tells the story of an English businessman who was abducted for ransom in South Africa. With the help of a South African widow, he escaped,” she explained.

Like any other person, Ria has met some challenges in her journey as an author, the biggest one being getting the book published.

“Publishing a book is not child’s play. Eventually I got it published by a company in the USA and now it is available from Amazon and Smashwords. I have sold a few copies in South Africa.”

Ria concluded by giving words of wisdom to the youngsters and said they need to read!
