Dreams do come true
Promising young talent from Horison chases her dreams in the Big Apple.
The Applause Rising Talent (ARTS) Summer Showcase has given the Johannesburg beauty, Mushota Makungu, the opportunity to reach for the stars.
From 2 to 9 July, the ARTS team conducted their summer showcase in Orlando, Florida for entertainers from around the world. A carefully selected group of competitors brought their A-game to perform for well-known industry professionals. The competition provides substantial exposure opportunities for singers, actors, dancers and more.
Mushota impressed the panel of agents, producers and casting managers when she performed the opening scene of the critically acclaimed, 1994 film, Forrest Gump and absolutely blew everyone away. To top off her already impressive performance, Mushota also did a cold read, an entertaining rendition of a television commercial and a dance routine.
The talented young lady made such an impression on the organisers and special guests of the event held at the Orlando World Centre Marriott, that she was offered a scholarship to the New York Conservatory (NYCDA) for Dramatic Arts.
NYCDA is a prestigious art school which will provide the perfect opportunity for Mushota to catapult her career. The bi-annual event has college recruiters on their guest list to scout for scholarship-worthy talent. Bryce Russel, the Director of Admissions at NYCDA, was at this particular event which worked in Mushota’s favour.
She expressed her gratitude and joy by saying, “I am grateful to God for this once in a lifetime opportunity and I want to thank my parents, friends and sisters, Elsubie Verlinden and Elouise Jansen van Rensburg. My ultimate dream is to help many people reach their dreams. In the words of Booker T. Washington: ‘Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others’ ”.
