WATCH: Youth showcases talent at the Witpoortjie library
Marlene Botha, a senior librarian, had everyone in stitches as she told a joke to lighten the mood.
On Wednesday, 31 July, the Witpoortjie Library was filled with youngsters who were ecstatic at the though of yet another performance session.
These sessions, which the library hosts every last Wednesday of the month, are a platform for the youth to showcase their talents, from dancing to delivering poetry to acting.
Marlene Botha, a senior librarian, had everyone in stitches as she told a joke to lighten the mood.
One of the attendees, Phehello Masitha, who is a dancer, took on the stage and gave a brief background about who he is.
“I am a dancer and I did not prepare for today, but because everyone is here to showcase what they can do, I felt the need to come up on the stage. When I went to Germany for a competition I entered, it was very tough but I had people from the United States of America appreciating my craft and asking me to teach them the kasi dance,” said Phehello.
Njabulo Shaka Sibeko presented a poem entitled Brewery, and when asked how he came up with this poem, he said, “I came up with this poem because I have seen the effects it has on families. I have witnessed how people change when they consume alcohol; I have seen young people drinking alcohol, trying to close a void they have.”
Shaka explained that he has seen how people drink alcohol because of being unable to meet the goals they have set for themselves and some who take it to look cool.
“I really thought of writing about this because it is perceived as something that helps with having fun, however it is damaging our society because it leads to abuse, and wrong decisions, among other things. Some people die on the roads because others consume alcohol,” he said.
