Metro bus diesel spill causes disastrous evening for motorists
Our vehicle, a Hyundai H1, slipped on the diesel and hit a pole, which brought us to a standstill,” she said.
The evening of 30 July ended in an awful manner for a number of motorists who got involved in separate crashes in one spot, due to a diesel spillage, allegedly caused by a Metro Bus on the corner of Christiaan de Wet Road and Beyers Naudé Drive in Honeydew.
One motorist who happened to be a victim of the spill, said she came across a Metro Bus that had broken down, dripping diesel onto the tar surface. “Our vehicle, a Hyundai H1, slipped on the diesel and hit a pole, which brought us to a standstill,” she said.

Seconds after their incident, she said she witnessed two other vehicles, including motorcycles, being damaged due to the unattended diesel spill. “As we stood still, a VW Jetta and Toyota slipped too, causing damage to both vehicles. Following that, a Mr Delivery motorcycle slipped and the driver fell from the bike. He was followed shortly after by another motorcycle,” she said as she recounted the scene.
She claimed that the spillage was reported to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and fire department, neither of which responded quickly to close the road.

She said the road was eventually closed by First Help to avoid further chaos. She also alleged that when the JMPD eventually arrived at the scene, the officers were not bothered by the accidents.
“JMPD arrived and claimed they would investigate the cause of the accidents. Meanwhile, they could smell and see the diesel on the road,” a dissatisfied motorist claimed.
She was, however, grateful that no injuries were sustained, despite the damage to the affected cars that will be a cost to the owners.
JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, advised the complainant to lodge a formal complaint at JMPD Internal Affairs Unit on 011 490 1797 for the incident to be investigated.
