With taxis causing havoc on Hendrik Potgieter Road on a daily basis, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department came out and clamped down on some of the unroadworthy vehicles.
On Monday, 23 July, the law enforcers conducted a roadblock during which five taxis were pulled off the road.
The ward commander, Superintendent Wandile Mrubata, confirmed that the taxis had been impounded.

The roadblock took place a weekend after a fatal collision involving a taxi and motorcycle. This incident occurred on the evening of 20 July, in the vicinity of Makro/ Clearwater Mall, just before 8pm. Both the driver of the motorcycle and his pillion passenger lost their lives in the crash.
According to an eyewitness, Reggie Morris, the taxi caused the deadly collision.
“After the collision, there was no movement from the motorcycle’s driver, and I assumed he had died. However, the female pillion passenger was still breathing,” he recalled.
BCI Security reported that the taxi driver was under guard in hospital.
