The packs included food parcels, clothing, soap, beanies and knitted dolls as well as toys for the young ones. Patients also received flowers, with a printed message of encouragement, to make them feel special this Mandela Day.

“What we did today was just in support of the patients that are in the oncology wards and diagnosed with cancer. It was very nice to see the patients with their spouses or family members next to them, supporting them through this journey. We visited them to show them that we are thinking of them and wishing them a speedy recovery,” said Vlooi Venter, the national CANSA trainer.

She also explained the Wall of Remembrance that was seen at one of the places they visited. “That wall was started in 2014, and every person that has completed their chemotherapy leaves a hand stamp on the wall, with their name on it,” said Vlooi.

Isabel Gomes from CANSA thanked everyone that helped and donated towards their care packs. She also thanked the volunteers for their time.
