Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe was born on this day, 19 July, in 1949.

Motlanthe is a South African politician who served as President of South Africa between 25 September 2008 and 9 May 2009, after the resignation of Thabo Mbeki in 2008.

At the end of his interim presidency, he was appointed as the Deputy President of South Africa.

Motlanthe gave his first and only State of the Nation Address on 6 February 2009.

During the 53rd National Conference of the African National Congress, Motlanthe contested the position of President but Jacob Zuma beat him to it.

He had been a student activist, trade unionist and member of the ANC’s military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, during the struggle against apartheid.

Motlanthe was South Africa’s first Setswana-speaking president.

He announced his resignation from government and parliament in 2014, alongside Trevor Manuel.
