Florida Swimming Club took a team of 19 swimmers to participate in the 48th Sasol National Winter Championships held in Sasolburg from 24 to 29 June.

The event is hosted every year at the Municipal swimming pool, named after former South African swimmer, Penny Heyns.

Of the 19 swimmers, eight were attending the event for the first time.

The team comprised a nice combination of senior and junior swimmers, the seniors really taking the time to mentor and lead the juniors through the six-day competition.

Most of the participants came from clubs in the Orange Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Florida’s swimmers pulled out all the stops, scoring a massive 953 points in total, resulting in an overall fifth place.

The top male points scorer was Blake Godfrey, who scored 112 points. He also bagged four gold medals and four silver medals.

The top female points scorer was Amy O’Rourke with 86 points. She came home with two silver medals and one bronze medal.

Amy Clarke was awarded the Bob Harker trophy for Honest Endeavour; a trophy awarded to the swimmer who scores the most points but misses out on a medal. Amy scored a total of 52 points and achieved personal best times in several of her events.

The team brought home a whopping 43 medals – 13 gold, 16 silver and 14 bronze.

Head Coach, Tracey Hemphill, said, “The FSC swimmers will be in action again at the Central Gauteng Aquatics (CGA) short course championships at the end of July, and we are really looking forward to seeing our full team in action.”
