Today in History: Ex politician Roelf Meyer was born

Roelf Meyer and Cyril Ramaphosa, played a big role in paving the way for fully democratic elections in 1994.

On 16 July 1947, Roelf Meyer was born. He is a former politician and National Party (NP) negotiator at the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA).

The two negotiated for a peaceful political settlement between the key major political parties of that time, namely the NP and the African National Congress (ANC).

Former President Nelson Mandela honoured Meyer and rewarded him with the position of Minister of Constitutional Development, a post he previous held under the apartheid regime.

Meyer and Bantu Holomisa formed the United Democratic Movement (UDM) in 1997, where he served as Deputy President.

Meyer retired from politics in the year 2000 to concentrate on other business ventures he had undertaken.
