Recycler’ ghastly dustbin discoveries

A day into the perplexing investigation into the identity of the person who dumped the foetus, the Northsider caught up with a recycler who was going about his day, dragging his trolley along the road as he sought materials to recycle to put food on his family's table.

While the community remains shocked and shaken by the recent gruesome discovery of a deceased baby inside a dustbin outside a complex in Harveston AH, such traumatic discoveries aren’t new to some to recyclers.

On Tuesday, 9 July, authorities attended to a complex after they were notified of a baby buried in a pile of rubbish. The discovery was made by two recyclers while digging through the bins for recyclable material on refuse collection day.

An insider at the complex, who is assisting by going through long hours of CCTV footage, indicated that the baby wasn’t fully developed – leading to the belief that the baby was stillborn. She said they cannot even trace the bin because they aren’t assigned to or marked for any particular unit.

A day into the perplexing investigation into the identity of the person who dumped the foetus, the Northsider caught up with a recycler who was going about his day, dragging his trolley along the road as he sought materials to recycle to put food on his family’s table.

Ivan Modise, a 23-year-old recycler from Zandspruit, said he has had his own fair share of ghastly discoveries digging through numerous trash cans.

“The discovery of the foetus was not surprising to me because, as a recycler, I have come across some horrific things in the past,” said Modise, who claims to only have a few months of experience in the recycling ‘business’ after losing his job as a merchandiser.

Apart from discovering dead animals, Modise claims to have rescued a baby in Ruimsig during June. “While digging through the dustbins in the Ruimsig area, I heard something that sounded like a baby and when I opened the bin, I found a baby girl,” he recalled.

“I managed to get help from a passer-by who took the baby to the police and hospital. That discovery left me traumatised for weeks. As a result, I’m still scared of digging through the bins,” he explained.

He also added that sadly the insensitive disposal of infants does not end with trash cans. “We also came across another infant in a blocked drain in Cosmo City earlier this year. The infant lay in running sewer water for hours before it was taken away.”

This incident was reported on by the Northsider.

As unqualified as he is, the vulnerable recycler urged undecided parents to visit health facilities before resorting to dumping their infants, as it is both a crime and a very disturbing experience for members of the public.
