Is PLG Schools running a scam?

After the exposé, some parents, including those whose children attended the PLG Allens View Academy in Allen’s Nek, did not take the shocking news lightly. They demanded questions and some even resorted to pulling out their children as they felt their futures were at risk.

The objective of offering quality and affordable private education to learners at PLG Schools is being questioned by many parents since the credibility of the education group was thrust into the spotlight following a Carte Blanche exposé.

The investigative documentary revealed numerous issues faced by PLG campuses, including allegations of running an unregistered institution.

One of the parents, Malyssa Hattingh, who has not only removed her son from the school but opened a case of fraud at the local police station, told the Northsider about the different offices she approached to have the legitimacy of her son’s school verified, after allegedly failing to get assurance from the school that the allegations doing the rounds were false.

“I also checked with UMALUSI and found that none of the PLG Schools were accredited with this organisation. I met with Mdu Monyane from the Independent Schools Directorate at the Gauteng Department of Education, together with two of her colleagues, who confirmed that not only was the school not registered, there is no application on file either,” she explained.

GDE and the PLG Group have been approached for comment with regards to the registration issue. GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said he was awaiting confirmation from his team, while PLG’s director of education said the question had been forwarded to their CEO.

“You appear to have taken it upon yourselves to play with the lives of innocent children and their families, not to mention the elderly.

It is utterly appalling and I, as a very concerned mother of a child who is on track to complete his primary school education within the next six months, will certainly not leave this matter as it stands,” Malyssa wrote to the school in a string of emails.

She and a few other parents have found other schools for their children which they will start attending when schools open for the third school term.

Another parent said she had to comfort her child who misses his old school after having to leave without really understanding why it was necessary.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan said a case of fraud is under investigation.
