UNISA appeals to students to be alert when making payments

'These accounts are not UNISA bank accounts and the contact details are not those of UNISA'

The University of South Africa (UNISA) is urging its students to always be vigilant when making payments to the institution.

UNISA was made aware of a fraudulent website that provides students with incorrect contact details to the University and presents itself as the Unisa Florida Campus website.

According to a statement released by the tertiary institution, students calling these numbers are presented with a list of banking details including Capitec Bank, Pep Money Gram, ABSA Bank and First National Bank in order to deposit study fees.

“These accounts are not UNISA bank accounts and the contact details are not those of UNISA. UNISA has a single website and does not use secondary websites,” read the statement.

Students are reminded of the UNISA telephone number which is is 080 000 1870 and the official UNISA website, which is https://www.unisa.ac.za.

The statement further went on to state that, “Payment methods and banking details are available on the link below on the official UNISA website. The UNISA website has a web page with UNISA’s payment methods and banking details: www.unisa.ac.za/paymentinfo. All changes made by UNISA, where students are affected, will be communicated via official communication channels, including our official website, and myUnisa.”

The university pleaded with students to use the information provided on the web page and said they will never publish alternative banking details on another web page.

“We will also never send alternative banking details via e-mail or request you telephonically to make payments to an alternative bank account. Students are always encouraged to take care and remain vigilant. Students are also encouraged to contact the Unisa Fraud/Corruption Hotline on telephone number on 0800 203 785 or e-mail: Unisa@whistleblower.co.za when any suspicious activities are noted,” concluded the statement.
