An operation to crack down on illegal mining activities and disconnect illegal electricity supply is currently underway in Matholesville, Roodepoort.
The joint operation is being conducted by Roodepoort Police, Joburg Water, City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Metro Police Department, among other stakeholders.

Authorities went from door to door, cutting all illegal connections in the area.
At the sites where illegal mining is rife, phendukas that are used to grind the ore were found inside the holes the zama zamas have dug.
Captain Juanita Yorke, Roodepoort Police spokesperson, confirmed to the Record that a number of arrests have been made.
