WATCH: Local dance crew wins big in Cape Town
After energetic performances during the three-day competition, various groups came out top.
Dancers from the Johannesburg-based DanceSport School League (DSSL) proved to the rest of the provinces that they are the kings and queens of the performance stage in Cape Town.
The dance crew, consisting of talented youngsters of varying age groups, competed at the 2019 inter-provincial dance tournament from 21 to 23 June.
After energetic performances during the three-day competition, various groups came out top.
“The U/14, U/16, and U/18 boys and girls attained gold medals for group performances, while the U/13s and U/16s received silver in the same category. In the duo performances, a number of pairs got various medals,” said former DSSL dancer turned manager, Xavien Myles, as he discussed their successes.
Xavien, a former Allen Glen High School learner and now a Witwatersrand University student from Florida, also reflected on the tournament, which he said reminded him of his prime days as a dancer.
“The competition was a really good experience for the dancers. It also reminded me of when I used to dance,” he said.
Last year, Xavien was behind a number of successful flash mobs at local shopping centres, including Clearwater Mall.
Since the league only caters for school-going children, Xavien has had to put his passion on hold as he no longer qualified for the league after matriculating in 2018.
“I am one of the managers for the junior squad now and this is my way of giving back to the sport that allowed me to grow so much as a dancer,” he said.
He congratulated all the participants for making DSSL proud.
