During a shootout that occurred this afternoon, Friday, 28 June at about 6pm, at old Roodepoort Rugby Club informal settlement,
8 people were shot – 1 fatally wounded.
According to bystanders, the shootout occurred between two rival gangs of illegal miners also known as Zama-Zamas. The 8 were rushed to a nearby hospital and the one dead was found in a field by the police’s West Rand K9 Unit.

“The community is very concerned about the incidents caused by the Zama-Zamas and we hope that they could be stopped before anymore lives are being lost,” said Florida CPF Chairperson, Riaz Jogee.
