Animal lover on a mission to support animal shelters

What Kelly said saddens her the most about animals kept in shelters is that those pets did not choose to be there, therefore she blames humans for their negligence.

Her pure, natural love for animals has prompted a compassionate Kelly Human from Little Falls to advocate for vulnerable animals that are kept at animal shelters across Johannesburg.

This animal lover, who is the owner of four dogs and one cat has spearheaded an initiative to collect items from the community which she will in turn donate to various needy animal shelters.

The youngster expressed her reasons for taking charge of the plight of animals. “It’s really cold at the moment (being winter), and having four dogs of my own that have a warm house to stay in, I came to the realisation that there are many animals in these shelters that don’t even have blankets and other things to keep them warm, let alone warm homes to stay in,” she explained.

What Kelly said saddens her the most about animals kept in shelters is that those pets did not choose to be there, therefore she blames humans for their negligence.

“It’s not their choice to be there – they’ve been put in the situation because of people’s failure to sterilise or look after them properly. For me this is sad, because I am an animal lover,” she lamented, also expressing that if she could adopt them all she would, but resources would be a struggle.

“Because I wanted to make as big a difference as possible, I decided to collect a bunch of stuff and donate it to various shelters across the city,” Kelly explained.

She said she has already made some donations to a number of shelters including Arch, CLAW, Kitty and Puppy Haven, and aims to reach out to more shelters, especially those struggling to keep their doors open.

To fulfill her mission, Kelly said she is in need of sponsorships, be they from individuals, organisations or businesses.

“I require a lot of blankets, especially fleece because it can be washed; food; newspapers for cleaning purposes, and cleaning products. Some shelters, such as CLAW, even require building material because they are struggling in terms of infrastructure. We require someone who can donate the material in order to build proper structures for the animals,” she pleaded.

Kelly added that the donations can be made at her residential address in Little Falls or she can drive to a location where a donation is being made for collection.

Her supportive mother, Izabela, also weighed in by encouraging people to be responsible pet owners. “The sad part is there are very few people that can adopt these animals because animal lovers already have their own pets, and it’s difficult to take in more. People need to be educated about the responsibilities of owning an animal,” she said.
