“We appeal to residents to assist with the reporting of land invasions as soon as they start”.
These are the words of the City of Johannesburg’s Mayor, Herman Mashaba, in a tweet he sent out after law enforcement agencies descended on Zandspruit on Tuesday, 25 May, to demolish illegal structures.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) together with the police broke down numerous structures on the invaded land when they paid the area a visit, an act which left some Zandspruit residents disgruntled.
In the tweet, Mashaba, who recently pegged site and service stands in Zandspruit, reiterated that the land in question is earmarked for site and serviced settlements.
The MMC for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, also commented on this problem. “These invasions are intended to derail attempts by the City to provide development to residents of Zandspruit through identified site and service stands and electrification projects. Please report all land invasions in Joburg to the City’s Hotline, on 0800 120 555,” she said in her tweet.

Normally, the demolition of illegal structures is followed by protest action in Zandspruit; however, none was reported by the authorities after the recent campaign.
