In his first five months in Test cricket, he reached 50 wickets in only seven matches, which made him the second fastest ever wicket-taker in Test history.
Philander was chosen for the emerging players tournament in Australia, and took 3 wickets for 30 runs, as well as hitting 59 runs off 50 balls in the final against New Zealand A.
He has also played English county cricket for Middlesex, Somerset and Kent.
In 2018, he was named in Durban Heat’s squad for the first edition of the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament.
His international debut was made on his 22nd birthday. His first One Day International (ODI) was against Ireland and he took 4 wickets for 12 runs, which was a match-winning performance.
