Marno undergoes second cochlear implant successfully

His doctor said that he had to be very careful not to damage the facial nerves as Marno's anatomy is a bit different to that of normal children.

After a successful cochlear implant operation in 2018, baby Marno Greyvenstein from Radiokop displayed his strong character and fought off pneumonia at the beginning of this year.

Marno was born on 23 August 2016 with a whole host of complications, including not having a corpus callosum, having severe micrognathia, a hole in the septum of his heart and being unable to hear.

The first cochlear implant operation was a success and according to Marno’s father, Emile, “Signs have been positive as he has been responding to noises and attending speech therapy.”

Marno went for his second cochlear implant on 10 June at Netcare Waterfall City Hospital. This second implant would help him to have bilateral hearing and help with localising sounds.

Marno came out of theatre at about 1.30pm, after a very difficult procedure that was supposed to last 3 hours.

There was a bit of bleeding that complicated things a little more, but at the end of the day the operation was a huge success and the implant was done.

He had his follow-up visit after the operation and the doctor is satisfied with everything, despite a little remaining swelling around the wound site.

Marno’s father said, “We are seeing the doctor again in a month’s time for the go-ahead for switch on. Marno is just happy to be rid of those irritating bandages. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for keeping Marno safe during this healing process. All the glory goes to God as we are nothing without Him.”
