Five generations celebrate 95-year-old’s birthday
Her eldest son, Pip van Riel, who is a well-known base guitarist in the South African music industry was also in attendance to celebrate his mother’s birthday.
Five generations came together on Saturday 15 June, to celebrate the birthday of 95-year-old Sue van Riel from Floroma Old Age Home in Roodepoort.
Her actual birthday is on 20 June but it was celebrated on the 15th because of the long weekend to give all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren up to the fifth generation the opportunity to attend the celebrations.

Sue’s eldest daughter said, “It feels so good to have everybody present here today to celebrate the long life of our mother. I am sure she is overwhelmed by the presence of all her children and all the generations.”
The function was held in the hall at the Ruimsig Retirement Village where Sue was happy to be sitting in front of her delighted offspring.
Her eldest son, Pip van Riel, who is a well-known base guitarist in the South African music industry was also in attendance to celebrate his mother’s birthday.
Pip’s youngest brother, Pierre van Riel who was one of the original members of the South African band called The Four Jacks and a Jill could not make it to the function and was represented by his son.
The venue was decorated with a lot of pictures of Sue in her younger days. One photograph on display was of a very young Sue showing off her flexible body as she was said to be double-jointed, which was evident on the photograph.
