A 54-hour major water shutdown planned by Rand Water is expected to affect several municipalities in Gauteng, including the City of Johannesburg, next week.
Johannesburg Water (JW) has advised residents that the shutdown will affect reservoirs and towers from 24 June.
According to Isaac Dhludlu, JW spokesperson, the shutdown will take place on the B11 pipeline, where they will be installing a 2 500ml butterfly valve from Lethabo to the Vereeniging pumping station. This will result in a limited supply of water to all Rand Water customers.

However, Dhudlu clarified that the shutdown will not mean that taps will be totally dry. “Please note that this does not necessarily mean that there will be no water during the 54-hour shutdown period; however, due to the extremely long duration of the process, some areas may experience a shortage of water or low pressure,” he explained.
“Johannesburg Water appeals to residents of the City of Johannesburg to use water sparingly during the shutdown in order to avoid a complete no-water situation, and reminds all that Level 1 water restrictions are still in place,” he advised.
The entity apologised for the inconvenience and urged residents to follow its social media platforms for updates.
