Today, 18 June, we honour the birthday of Thabo Mbeki, who is one of South Africa’s former presidents.
Mbeki is a politician who served as the second post-apartheid President of the country.
During his tenure in office, the South African economy grew. He attracted the bulk of Africa’s Foreign Direct Investment and made South Africa the focal point of African growth. He also oversaw the successful building of economic bridges to nations such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC).
Mbeki mediated in issues on the African continent, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, and some important peace agreements.
Born and raised in Mbewuleni, Mbeki is one of four children. His father was a stalwart of the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).
Mbeki has received many honorary degrees from South African and foreign universities. He is currently the vice-chancellor of the University of South Africa.
Other well-known people born today are musicians Paul McCartney, of The Beatles, and Blake Shelton. Shelton is also known for his role as a judge on many episodes of the American talent series, The Voice.
