#CaxtonCares – Animal Wellness Day has a plethora of animal care on offer

The Wellness Day promises to be a family outing which will leave you not only educated about your horse or hound, but also show that you care about animal welfare.

The Horse and Hound Wellness Day on 29 June at the AFM Church Noordheuwel, in partnership with the News, is exactly what the community needs to help educate the masses on how to care for dogs and horses.

This follows since the last couple of weeks, the News’ sister publication, the Roodepoort Record, reported on two incidents where unstable persons killed their own dogs in horrific ways. These incidents are a clear indication that animal education is of utmost importance within the West Rand community

This Wellness Day is the brain child of Yolanda Steyn of Oppistal, a fully fledged equine recreational and rehab centre in Sterkfontein.

Yolanda, together with Vicki Sokolich, wrote and published a book, Introduction to horse ownership in South Africa, and decided to launch it at Oppistal’s second Wellness Day.

The objective of this book is to firstly empower the first-time horse owner, to not only know and understand what it takes to comprehensively care for your horse, but also to avoid the many pitfalls in the process of acquiring a horse, and finally, to appreciate what your responsibility in training and possibly retraining your horse is.

Yolanda and Vicki will donate half of the proceeds made from the book launch and sales at the Wellness Day to three animal shelters and organisations to help them in their animal welfare work.

The Wellness Day promises to be a family outing which will leave you not only educated about your horse or hound, but also show that you care about animal welfare.

From 10am until 3pm it will be a jam-packed day, filled with animal goodie stalls, artisanal food stalls, equine complementary care therapy demonstrations such as dentistry, physiotherapy and acupuncture, as well as a herbs and natural remedies demonstration for your horse or dog. Entrance is free.

The 9th Day Animal Shelter, Friends of Rescued Animals (Fora) and Highveld Horse Care Unit will receive much-needed funds, acquired by the selling of raffle tickets as well as funds raised from the selling of stall space.

The 9th Day will also have microchipping available at their stall on the day. Cost is R150 once off (no annual fees) for an IdentiPet microchip.

More stall space is available for R200 per stall. To book your space or for more information about the Wellness Day, contact either Ilse on 084 584 2473, email icaon@fnb.co.za, or Yolanda on 082 829 9003, email yolanda@healinghorses.co.za.
