On this day in 1983, former South African rugby union player, Bryan Habana, was born.

Habana played as wing for both Toulon in the French Top 14 competition, and the South Africa national team.

He was part of the Springbok team that won the Rugby World Cup in 2007, and was named one of the stars of the tournament. He was subsequently named the 2007 International Rugby Board Player of the Year.

During the 2015 Rugby World Cup, he equalled Jonah Lomu’s career record of 15 tries in World Cups.

He is in second place on the list of all-time test try scorers, with a total of 67 tries. He is superseded only by the Japanese player, Daisuke Ohata.

Last year in April, Habana announced he would retire from all rugby at the end of his French Top 14 club, Toulon’s, season.
