Residents have raised concerns about the continuous illegal dumping that is happening in their area. They believe that if it continues, it will lead to health hazards for the community.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun, is urging residents to report illegal dumping. “An illegal dumper who is caught for the first time, might have to fork out R10 000 to get his vehicle back from the City of Johannesburg. We need to hit the law-breakers where it hurts most. Currently the impound fee is R2 970, which does not serve as a serious deterrent for operators who frequently charge up to R2 000 per load.”
For the removal of illegally dumped waste, call Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 to log a call.
Pikitup only attends to illegal dumping on pavements, streets and council-owned land. Illegal dumping in parks is the responsibility of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.
Illegal dumping on privately-owned land falls under the Environmental Health Directorate, and each of the city’s regions has its own environmental health section to which this practice can be reported. Region C’s environmental health managers can be contacted on 011 761 0217.
