#JusticeForLee: Liyaqat Lee Foundation to lend a helping hand
The Liyaqat Lee Foundation will be commemorating Lee Mentoor's birthday by lending a helping hand to those in need.
Estelle Delport, the family spokesperson, as well as the Director of the Foundation, explained. “We will be commemorating Lee’s fifth birthday on 16 June, which is also Youth Day and Father’s Day, by providing a helping hand to the No More Victims Safe House in Eldorado Park, and fix it up a bit. They house approximately eight children at a time, aged from birth to 14 years old. Once they come into the safe house the social workers try to place them in homes. But, even though they are a registered entity, they battle with funding.”

She added that the Liyaqat Lee Foundation is a registered non-profit company (NPC) as well as a non-governmental organisation (NGO), and said, “One of the core functions of the Foundation is ensuring child protection and safety, and we are still in the process of trying to implement certain structures. But, we also want to assist other entities that help children, and that is why we decided to start with this safe house. To enable us to succeed on this day, we are in need of the community’s assistance.”
They are in need of the following, to enable them to assist the safe house on the day:
• Cement to patch up some holes in the walls
• Paint for inside and outside
• Black chalkboard paint
• Assistance in finishing up the garden, which would provide fresh fruit and vegetables, including mesh to close it off, as well as all the necessities to ensure the garden is well maintained.
• Cupboard for the sink in the kitchen as the one they had rotted due to moisture
• Sand pit
• Some toys for the kids
• Toiletries
Estelle concluded by saying, “There is so much more they need, but for now anything would be appreciated.
“We are also in need of volunteers to come help us on the day, and, if possible, for someone to donate some food and drink, to ensure the volunteers are fed. With the Foundation being very new, we are also trying to find our way and would appreciate any assistance and advice moving forward.”
