Matla A Bana touches lives in the Free State

Because a child is raped every three minutes in South Africa – children as little as four to 12-year-olds in particular – the organisation decided to expand its footprint nationwide by supporting the Free State Province Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

As the country commemorates National Child Protection Week (from 27 May to 3 June), Matla A Bana did its bit to make a difference in the lives of future victims of abuse.

This non-profit organisation, which aims to be a voice against child abuse, collaborated with different sponsors and stakeholders on Tuesday, 28 May, to put together comfort packs for children at Clearwater Mall in Strubens Valley.

“This is a National Child Protection Week initiative. Expanding our footprint country-wide is meant to make a difference to the lives of children and minimise secondary abuse by the system. This is to ensure that the child is less intimated when reporting an incident of abuse,” said Lizel van Eeden, the Matla A Bana project manager.

Brigadier Mmantsheke Anna Lekhele from the Free State Province FCS Unit said, after receiving the packs, “The comfort packs will assist in ensuring the dignity of our victims, especially when a victim is being examined and the victim’s clothes is taken for forensic testing. They will be a great help if the victims have not brought along extra clothes.” Mnatsheke added that the packs will be distributed among the 18 clusters in the Free State.

A major sponsor, PNA Group, commented about Matla A Bana’s good deeds. “We are extremely proud of the work that Matla A Bana has been doing and continues to do for the communities, and the support they provide to children in difficult times. We got involved so we can touch the lives of these children who go through different forms of abuse,” said Chantelle Fritz, the PNA Group marketing manager.

PNA did not only contributed a monetary donation. Some of its staff together with Honeydew Police members assisted in packing and decorating the comfort packs.
