Cheddar nominated for song of the year

"It all comes back to being a music lover and being passionate about everything I do when it comes to music."

A local artist, Dlozi Cheddar Mahlatse, is preparing to fly the West Rand flag up high at the 011 Awards happening on Saturday, 1 June.

Cheddar has been nominated in the Song of the Year category, for his song entitled Tipoti.

“It’s an amazing experience for me, as an upcoming artist, to be nominated. When I received the email I couldn’t believe the news, but then I recalled that I had sent the best project. Being nominated for Song of the Year is the best thing ever. It’s made me realise that my hard work is slowly paying off. I really need to bring this one home to the West Rand,” he said.

It all started at the age of 16, when he made sure he was always up to date with the latest music.

“I started deejaying at family gatherings and parties, but I only did that because it was a trending hobby. Some years later, I became a music producer and beat maker. My production was not top notch but I didn’t give up,” said Cheddar.

When asked about his name, he explained, “The stage name comes from my high school days. I’m from a financially stable family and people used to call me Cheeseboy, a rather derogatory term, which wasn’t something I was proud of. A friend of mine realised that I wasn’t comfortable with it, and converted it to Cheddar.”

He is urging the community to help him bring the award home.

“For me to win, I need people to vote for me by sending an SMS, stating “011 Cheddar”, to 35029,” he concluded.
