Johannesburg Water has started a R10 million sewer upgrade and rehabilitation in Cosmo City Ext 2.
The project is aimed at putting an end to the constant, unsightly blockages in the sewerage system on the main road of the township that have been plaguing residents for over a year. The pipe blockages and overflowing manholes are posing health risks and affecting the residents’ standards of living.

The contractor has already established a site and the Johannesburg Water teams are monitoring progress by ensuring that a jet truck flushes the manhole and the line daily to alleviate pressure. The contractor is expected to complete the upgrade by October.
The project was initiated due to complaints from the community of Cosmo City Ext 2 about a failing sewer network. These complaints were confirmed by Johannesburg Water operations (Randburg Depot) as a serious concern requiring urgent intervention.
The pipes to be installed are larger in diameter than the existing ones to lessen the occurrence of sewer blockages. A 200mm diameter unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) pipe will be upgraded to a 300mm uPVC pipe for approximately 850m, and a 300mm diameter uPVC pipe will be upgraded to a 400mm diameter uPVC pipe for approximately 1 050m.
Residents of Cosmo City are urged not to flush any foreign objects into the system. These include feminine products, cooking grease/ food, baby wipes/ wet wipes, dental floss, cotton balls, diapers and cigarette butts.
