The two unfortunate collisions that recently occurred at the intersection of General Pienaar Avenue and Ham Street resulted in the community calling for the implementation of a four-way stop.
According to Rene Benjamin, the ward councillor for the Witpoortjie area, in which the four-way stop was suggested, a site meeting was held with Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) and after discussions and deliberation, the best possible solution for this intersection is being looked into.

In the interim, temporary stop signs have been erected at the island in the middle of the road, forcing motorists using Ham Street to stop twice before crossing the intersection.
Rene said, “One has to take into account the number of businesses on the corners as well as the dual carriageway that heads in both directions, and the demarcated parking spaces alongside the centre median. These spaces have become problematic in that they make it difficult to see the oncoming traffic. The JRA is currently looking into the best solution for this intersection.”
A four-way stop seems to be the best option, but will only work if the motorists actually stop at the stop signs.
Benjamin also stated that the JRA has to do a traffic count in order for them to find an appropriate solution for the intersection.
Once a plan has been approved by the JRA and budget is made available for its implementation, the Record will provide its readers with a further update.
