Filling up stomachs on Wednesdays
"On my last two Wednesdays, I managed 40 half loaves on my travels."
Wednesdays have been dubbed ‘Loaf days’, and community members are urged to support this initiative.
Paul Smulders is the driving force behind this initiative, which is aimed at making a difference by feeding the hopeless on Wednesdays.
“Wednesdays are normally golf days, and I thought people on their way to golf can collect some bread from a local shop and drop it off on their way to various venues,” said Paul, as he explained why he chose this day.
“Nearly every day on my rounds, I pass many street corners and places where there are jobless people either asking for money, food, or work. I honestly can’t help them all, but it got me thinking that giving out bread would be much better than giving out money,” he added.
This initiative has been going on for three weeks and Paul said the smiles on their faces when he hands out the bread warms his heart.
“If 250 of my friends each bought two loaves of bread, which cost about R20, and cut them in half, and then gave four hungry people a half loaf on their rounds, we would have fed a minimum of 1 000 people on a Wednesday,” he said.
He is appealing to residents to help keep count of his target of 1 000 by emailing him on paul@remax-masters.co.za and stating how many half loaves they will be giving away on a Wednesday.
