Talent can take you places you never thought you would be
Two young, talented boys – Godfrey Phaahla and Antonio Britto – both from Hoërskool Roodepoort, recently qualified for the Talent Africa team to represent South Africa in the Talent America International Talent competition in New York from 22 June to 1 July.
Godfrey, a 16-year-old resident of Krugersdorp, said, “I took music as one of my subjects. I am part of a church brass brand, but I specialise in the trumpet. I started playing trumpet in church when I was 10 years old, just to learn the basics, but after a while I realised that I could be a musician. I never thought that it could lead me this far, though.”
“Playing the piano has been a passion of mine since I started at this school in 2017. Music was my subject of choice and I knew that my dreams were being answered. I passed an aptitude test with flying colours at my school and have been one of the top piano-players. I have only been playing the piano for about two years and have already been invited to perform at numerous functions,” said 15-year-old Antonio, who lives in Davidsonville.
They also mentioned that this opportunity is their big break and they urged local businesses and the community to help them raise funds to go attend this once in a life-time chance to represent the country in New York.
The tour to New York will be both educational as well as provide hands on experience targeted at young, up and coming performing artists, thus adding to their opportunities for further education.
“In a country like South Africa, it is refreshing to see two young students with such passion for music. We are proud parents, but not in a financial position to grow this passion further; however, we are hoping that with your assistance, we can give them the necessary platform to enhance their chances of making it in the music industry going forward,” the boys’ mothers said.
